Sparky “under a palm tree” is the mascot of the QSITE- Far North Queensland Chapter. Ours has been a collegial and well-functioning group ever since the Chapter concept was developed within QSITE many years ago. Our Chapter strives to annually conduct a variety of technology workshops and information services to assist in promoting the effective use of Information and Communication Technologies within FNQ classrooms. We strive to provide teachers in our remote area of the state with up to date information, teaching ideas and classroom resources. We continue to use the geography of cyberspace to reach QSITE members and professionals in our area.
The Far North Queensland Chapter sustains a pleasing level of membership (both personal and institutional). We strive to raise the profile of QSITE in Far North Queensland schools, as well as taking a leadership role in celebrating the best practice of Far North Queensland teachers and students.
The Chapter conducted what has been widely praised as the biggest, best and most successful ACCE National Computer Conference in Cairns in 2006. Our Chapter regularly hosts a one day “Technology in the Tropics” mini conference for educators each year which attracts around 200 participants.
Our Chapter also hosts and sponsors three annual FNQ robotics championships which includes Sumo, the Grand Prix and RoboCup. There has been an exponential growth in the popularity of these events and we regularly host over 100 students to these on a Saturday morning. The growth of schools entering students is also very pleasing.
Our small Chapter’s history also boasts numerous past winners of annual State QSITE awards from Educator of the Year, Leader of the Year and Emerging Leader of the Year. We also have had ISTE Award winners and a state Life member.
We always welcome newcomers to FNQ to our proactive group.
